Front End 3:1 Compression

Chromaplex can be used as a front end to simplify color compression. The encoded output of Chromaplex can be optionally compressed with monochrome JPEG to yield high compression ratios. By itself, Chromaplex produces a 3:1 compression ratio with practically no computation. These before-and-after images provide a sampling of the image quality Chromaplex maintains as a front end.

Chromaplex with JPEG

Chromaplex enhances the performance of monochrome compression schemes (like JPEG which, strictly speaking, is a monochrome standard). That is, with Chromaplex, the simplicity and advantages of monochrome compression still deliver full color. Here are some sample images which show varying levels of monochrome JPEG compression used on the color image encoded with Chromaplex.

Image Capturing Devices

Black and White to Color

Chromaplex can be used to upgrade monochrome cameras and scanners to allow them to output color while maintaining their current spatial resolution and without modifying the current design. The upgrade is economical because it does not require changing any of the existing signal-processing electronics! Just the CCD sensor needs to be exchanged for one with the same number of pixels. Here you will find images illustrating such an upgrade with Chromaplex.

Increased Resolution

With certain types of high-end cameras and scanners (those which are designed with 3 separate CCD chips or 3 scanning passes; i.e., a full CCD or a full scanning pass for each color primary), Chromaplex can increase the spatial resolution by up to 4 times!
