Black & White to ColorThe third demo image (a bank check) shows an example of a monochrome linear scanner upgraded to color with Chromaplex. It has 4 pictures: first, an original of a bank document in color and then the data from a scan with the same number of lines as the monochrome scan, but with alternating red, green, and blue filters (the scanner is only modified to do such color scanning alternation, but keeping the same number and density of lines; so, this trichrome scan has the same total data density of a monochrome scan). Then, the demo picture shows the image decoded into full color with Chromaplex from that scan, and also the result of first compressing the scan 8:1 (for storage and transmission) and then decoding with Chromaplex fo full color rendition. Because the color sampling here is only in one spatial dimension (full lines of each color primary) the quality of the result is not as good as with a two-dimensional color sampling pattern, but the scanner modification is simpler and the scanning speed is faster.
All images should be viewed in 24-bit color at 1024 x 768 monitor resolution (or better). (NOTE: For practical requirements of the Web, the images had to be compressed at the highest quality of conventional jpeg; i.e., about 2:1, but still require some time to be downloaded). Before clicking on the links, please note the (compressed) size.
