In this section, we give an overview of several areas that present important practical challenges when building agent-based systems. In doing so, we will explain why these challenges are particularly important for agent-based systems, mention a few of the more promising approaches that have been explored in each area, and indicate where our work falls with respect to these
This is by no means a summary of the entire range of challenges facing the agent-based systems developer, or the agent framework designer. Rather, in addition to the overriding concern with issues of practical importance, our choice of areas has been determined by the applications with which we have had experience (several of which are described later), and by our emphasis on the perspective of the agent community (as opposed to that of the individual agent).
