Welcome to my web page at SRI. I joined
the AI Center on 9/9/1999 and work
in the Natural Language Group.
Before joining SRI, I was a graduate student and then a post-doctoral
fellow in the Computer Science
Division of the
University of California, Berkeley
and the International Computer
Science Institute (ICSI) , Berkeley. There I worked with Jerry Feldman
and George Lakoff in the Neural
Theory of Language group.

One project involves collaborative research with the NTL and FrameNet groups at ICSI and with Dan Jurafsky's research group at the University of Colorado, Boulder. This is a very ambitious project whose overall goal is to build a neurally plausible, cognitively valid computational theory of language understanding. Sub-projects that I am actively involved in include building structured connectionist models of event structure, metaphor interpretation and bayesian models of human sentence processing. Recently, I have become interested in the role played by systems of mirror neurons and the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamic loop in language understanding. Funding for these projects come from a variety of sources, including an NSF-ITR/HCI grant #0086132.
The second project is aimed at providing semantic theories and markup
languages for artifacts and devices on the web. We call this effort Artifact
Theory. One aspect of Artifact theory involves developing semantic
markup languages and
tools for marking up web documents both with the logical structure
of the document (as in XML DTDs) and with the embedded functionality provided
by the document. This project called
DAML
is funded by DARPA. In particular, I have been involved in devloping
a markup language for specifying, using and composing services automatically.
You can find information about this project from SRI's
daml page . For the services specific information, including background
material, you can check out SRI's services
page.
The third project attempts to use Metaphor
Theory and Analogy to assist in Knowledge Acquisition for
complex domains such as Biological Entities and Processes. This is
part of the
Rapid Knowledge Formation project,
funded by DARPA. For some idea of my role in this project,
