Every surface without boundary is homeomorphic to a sphere with zero or more handles. The genus of the surface is the number of handles. So a sphere has genus 0, a torus has genus 1, and so on.
For a surface with boundary, the genus is the same as the genus of the corresponding surface without boundary (the surface obtained by "capping off" the surface with boundary by filling each boundary component with a disk)
