By removing one or more disks from a surface without boundary, we create a surface with boundary. The number of removed disks is the number of boundary components of the surface with boundary. A disk itself has one boundary component since it is homeomorphic to a sphere minus a disk. A cylinder or annulus has two boundary components, a Mobius band one.
