Spamming
By Pauline M. Berry
Definition
Spam refers to the cross-posting of a message to many Usenet Newsgroup.
However, the term has begun to be used when referring to any bulk email
message. The term 'spam' comes from the Monty Python skit in which the word
spam gradually takes over the menu; in this case, it means a message which is
posted many times, in one or more newsgroups or mailing lists, where it
interferes with the normal discussion.
History
In January 1994, Clarence Thomas IV of Andrews University posted a
message warning of Jesus' immanent return to all the newsgroups Andrews
University receives -- over six thousand. It prompted an outraged response
from Usenet users. Not only will spamming create a nuicance but it would also
use up disk space perhaps causing the demise of Usenet.
Spamming is considered a breach of netiquette. While some consider this a clash
between a group of nerds who wish to preserve the non-commercial Internet and
the new commercial Internet, it is in fact based on some real practical
considerations. Such as cost and space.
