Internet Protocols
By Pauline M. Berry
Because of the complexity of a data communication system such as the Internet a
whole set of co-operative protocols, a protocol suite, is used. The best known
suite on the Internet is the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol and the
Internet Protocol). The TCP/IP is basically a set of protocols arranged into 4
layers: the application layer, the transport Layer, Internet Layer and the
network transport layer. One of the protocols included in the TCP/IP suite is
the ftp (file transfer protocol) which allows a file to be moved from one
computer to another regardless of the operating systems or file storage format.
Currently, protocols which follow the OSI standard and those which conform to
TCP/IP are seen to be parallel standards but TCP/IP vendors may begin to
migrate their products to the ISO/OSI layered model.
