AIC Seminar Series

Almost 40 years ago, Doug Engelbart demonstrated the first collaborative software tools at a conference in San Francisco. The demonstration stunned the audience, who gave Engelbart a standing ovation. In many ways, today's collaborative tools aren't significantly better than the software demonstrated that day. One of the biggest problems is that these tools do not interoperate well with each other. Kim will discuss the need for a shared conceptual framework for collaborative tools, which will help reveal new possibilities for interoperability and improvement.

Eugene is Executive Director and cofounder of Blue Oxen Associates, a socially-conscious think tank devoted to improving collaboration and knowledge management. Previously, he worked as an independent consultant, specializing in software development, project management, and strategic planning, and before that, he was Senior Technical Editor at Dr. Dobb's Journal. He worked closely with Doug Engelbart on the Open Hyperdocument System, and served on the Core Planning Committee of Engelbart's Bootstrap Alliance. Eugene has written for a variety of publications, and is currently writing a book on the history of free software. Eugene received his A.B. in History and Science from Harvard University.

Please arrive at least 10 minutes early in order to sign in and be escorted to the conference room. SRI is located at 333 Ravenswood Avenue in Menlo Park. Visitors may park in the visitors lot in front of Building E, and should follow the instructions by the lobby phone to be escorted to the meeting room.
