   Abstract

Sixty scientists from around the globe contribute to this volume of 16 AI systems for environmental problem solving, including fire fighting, flood prediction, sewage and pollution, toxic algae bloom, plant physiology and climate, forest sustainability, etc. The book reveals pioneering hybrid AI work on these important issues.

   Bio for C. L. Mason

Editor and author Dr. C. L. Mason, Ph.D., created the first AAAI Workshop on Applied AI and Environment and the first IJCAI Workshop on AI and Environment. She has conducted AI research at NASA Ames, UC Berkeley and Stanford University. She was a visiting research scientist in the SRI AI Center for many years, occasionally sharing an office with John McCarthy. She is the creator of the DATMS algorithm and the concept of compassionate artificial intelligence. In addition to her work on AI she is a former fellow at the Stanford School of Medicine and was a researcher for the NY Times bestseller, "The Mind and How to Build One". This is the book web site. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early as you will need to sign in by following instructions by the lobby phone at Building E (or call Wilma Lenz at 650 859 4904, or Eunice Tseng at 650 859 2799). SRI is located at 333 Ravenswood Avenue in Menlo Park. Visitors may park in the parking lots off Fourth Street. Detailed directions to SRI, as well as maps, are available from the Visiting AIC web page. There are two entrances to SRI International located on Ravenswood Ave. Please check the Building E entrance signage.
