   Abstract

Legal scholars and practitioners are feeling increasingly overwhelmed with the expanding set of legislation and case law available these days, which is assuming more and more of an international character. Although current state-of-the-art NLP techniques provide valid solutions to help navigate legislation and retrieve information, the overall usefulness and effectiveness of the systems are limited due to their focus on terminological issues and information retrieval while disregarding the specific semantic aspects of law, in particular its logical structure in terms of constitutive and regulative rules, which allows legal reasoning. The project ProLeMAS (PROcessing LEgal language in normative Multi-Agent Systems) was a research project supported by a European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual fellowship aiming at making a step forward in the basic research in Legal Informatics, by devising cutting-edge computational representations of legal texts that may be used in concrete applications. The main result of the project was "reified Input/Output logic", a novel formalism that merges the insights, while preserving the advantages, of two recent proposals in Deontic Logic and Natural Language Semantics respectively: Input/Output logic and Prof. J.R. Hobbs’s neo-Davidsonian logical framework.

   Bio for Livio Robaldo

Livio Robaldo is a post-doc researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) of the University of Luxembourg, since 1st of June 2015. In February 2007, he earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Turin (Italy). Since then, he carried out research in Natural Language Semantics and Natural Language Processing, applying and devising novel techniques to several domains and research areas, including Ontologies, Natural Language Quantifiers, Discourse Connectives, Gamification, Temporal relations, Sentiment Analysis, and, finally, Legal Informatics, where his current research activity is fully centered. In 2015, he won a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual fellowship, on the project "ProLeMAS: PROcessing LEgal language in normative Multi-Agent Systems". In the same year, he won the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) project "MIREL - MIning and REasoning with Legal texts". In 2016, he won the FNR/CORE project "DAPRECO - DAta Protection REgulation COmpliance", in which he is currently working. In the context of the project MIREL, he is currently an official visiting scholar at Stanford University from October to December 2017. The results of the research activity of Livio Robaldo have been published in 76 locations, among which 16 journal papers. He is the single author of 4 journal papers and several conference papers.
