AIC Seminar Series

Noise enhancement

Notice:  Hosted by Richard Waldinger

Date:  Thursday, January 19th 2017 at 4:00pm

Location:  EK255 (SRI E building)  (Directions)

   Abstract

Most interesting physical and biological systems are nonlinear. In many, the nonlinearity takes the form of a step-like response to inputs, where there are one or more critical thresholds. Such systems are alternately insensitive and hypersensitive to changes in input. In this talk, I’ll show how adding noise can enhance the performance of a wide variety of biological and engineered systems, from ant colonies to gyroscopes.

   Bio for Steve Weinstein

Much of Steve’s work has straddled the boundary between physics and philosophy. He’s published on the role of space and time in quantum theory, the problem of time in quantum gravity, and the possibility of multiple time dimensions. He has a PhD in philosophy from Northwestern, did postdocs at UBC and Dartmouth, and has taught at Princeton and the University of Waterloo. He is an affiliate of the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, and a great admirer of Richard Waldinger’s work, in particular the Scotch chocolate chip cookies.
