Service domains constitute an application field where automated planning can
significantly contribute towards achieving more customisable compositions, and
pose a number of interesting problems to the AI community. Following the
vision to use domain-independent planning for generating compositions based on
atomic service descriptions, I will show how a CSP-based planning framework,
equipped with a declarative extended goal language, can meet the requirements
posed by two different application areas: a smart home equipped with
intelligent devices exposed as services, and a domain consisting of Web
Services offering a number of different functionalities. The main
characteristics of the planner include accommodating for incomplete knowledge
through active sensing and re-planning, support for continuous context update,
and for variables ranging over large domains. Evaluation for a number of
different scenarios including real users and services is provided, which
indicate that the planner can satisfy a variety of different needs with
minimum reconfiguration.
