AIC Seminar Series

The START Information Access System

Gary BorchardtM.I.T. AI Laboratory

Date:  2002-07-23 at 16:00

Location:  EJ228  (Directions)

   Abstract

This talk describes the START language-based question answering system that is the focus of Boris Katz's research group at the MIT AI Laboratory. START has been in development for over 15 years and has progressed through several stages of evolution. A key aspect of START's operation is a technique called natural language annotation, in which content-describing phrases and sentences are associated with information segments, and subsequent matches between user questions and stored annotations are used as a basis for retrieval of the information segments as responses to questions. The talk will include a summary of the historical development of START, an outline of major modules and capabilities of the system, examples of START in operation, and a description of current development work and future horizons.
