As a portal to neuro-anatomic information on the Web, BrainInfo (http://braininfo.org) does just about everything we had in mind when we started building it 15 years ago. The talk will indicate what we wanted the Website to do and the tools we developed to do to accomplish those goals, including the NeuroNames nomenclature, canonical brain atlas, ontology development tools, SQL database, XML generated displays, etc. Many of the tools were Â’custom builtÂ’. They do their job, but they are inflexible. Their limitations: 1) slow expansion of the website into other knowledge domains, specifically brain function and research methods; and 2) complicate editing of the database and modification of Web displays. We believe that a database and query engine in which information is indexed by concept (subject, topic) instead of, or in addition to, indexing by names (character strings) and location (files and URLs) will greatly accelerate our progress. |
