Our analysis is based on a suite of questions provided by Biology teachers. These questions capture the kinds of questions that students often ask after reading the textbook or attending a lecture. We analyze each question that uses the words how or why in its English statement. The goal of our analysis is to identify the knowledge representation and reasoning (KR&R) that would be needed for a computer program to answer such questions. We organize different kinds of reasoning needed into categories and identify the most promising categories to consider for implementation.
