Abstract

Texts are viewed as purposeful transactions whose interpretation requires inferences based on extra-linguistic as well as on linguistic information. Text processors are viewed as systems that model both a theory of text and a theory of information processing. The interdisciplinary research required to design such systems have a common center, conceptually, in the development of new kinds of lexical information, since words are not only linguistics objects, they are also psychological objects that evoke experiences from which meanings can be inferred. Recent developments in linguistic theory seem likely to promote more fruitful cooperation and integration of linguistic research with research on test processing.
