Analysis of How and Why Questions about a Biology Textbook

by Vinay K Chaudhri and Zahra Mohammadi Zadeh

in Proceedings of the 2nd Deep Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Challenge Workshop

2012.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the problem of answering “how” and “why” questions about biology as described in a biology textbook. Our analysis is based on a suite of questions provided by Biology teachers. These questions capture the kinds of questions that students often ask after reading the textbook or attending a lecture. We analyze each question that uses the words “how” or “why” in its English statement. The goal of our analysis is to identify the knowledge representation and reasoning (KR&R) that would be needed for a computer program to answer such questions. We organize different kinds of reasoning needed into categories and identify the most promising categories to consider for implementation.

Automated User-Centered Reasoning and Acquisition System

The goal of this project is to build a generic knowledge acquisition capability for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Using the system, the scientists will be able to formulate their knowledge in the three science domains, and the high school students will be able to pose Advanced-Placement style questions and get user appropriate explanations.
