This paper takes the view that interest in the development of robot-like devices is both a natural consequence of past developments, and a necessary stimulant to future research in the evolution of artificial intelligence and non-numerical problem solving. We consider a robot to be a computer-controlled mechanism that can interact with its real-world environment in an autonomous, reasonably intelligent manner.
