   Abstract

If previous studies are any indication, there is a national need to develop advanced automation techniques to increase industrial productivity and to enhance the well-being of works by eliminating hard, dangerous, and dull jobs. In this paper we are concerned with the application of sensor-mediated programmable automation to material-handling, inspection, and assembly operations in batch-produced, discrete-part manufacturing.
