   Project Description

In Meme Epidemiology we targeted the exchange of ideas, seeking to explain their spread in online communities. Our work had three unique qualities. First, we adopted a strict interpretation of "meme." Instead of a funny link or faddish notion, in MemeEpi a meme was an identifiable idea commonly expressed in language and serving to mark cultural allegiance of various kinds. Example memes might be: "big government is the problem," or "climate change is an emergency." Second, we applied techniques and models borrowed from epidemiology to explain the prevalence and spread of these ideas over time. And finally, we sought to explain these things as a function of community, under the hypothesis that membership in cultural groups conditions receptivity to such memes.
