The MAPGEN mixed-initiative planning system, developed by NASA Ames, is being used currently to generate daily mission plans for the MER robots Spirit and Opportunity. The use of this AI planning system has been a great success, enabling significant increases in planning efficiency and overall scientific results. The use has also identified opportunities for improving next-generation mission planning systems. SRI, in collaboration with colleagues at NASA Ames, is conducting research to address two of these areas, namely (a) increased user control of the planning process, and (b) improved explanatory capabilities. | |
