A system that exploits context and stored knowledge to recognize cultural objects, vegetation, terrain formations, and navigational features in natural scenes. This system used the CKS database concepts, coupled with a representation of natural objects to develop and improve a description of an outdoor environment, based on multiple images and stored information. It is a major contribution to the problem of recognition in the outdoor world. One of its main innovations is an effective way to use contextual knowledge at even the lowest levels in the image analysis process.
