SRI has been a pioneer in the development of optimization algorithms for visual recognition in which an objective function is optimized to determine its best fit with image data. We have used these algorithms for finding roads, buildings, vegetation, and rivers, in aerial and ground-level outdoor imagery. The ability to fit a deformable object model to multiple images simultaneously, and the employment of continuation methods to avoid local minima, are examples of our advances.
