Air Travel Information Service (ATIS)
From 1990 to 1994, SRI International
used the task of retrieving airline schedules, fares, and related
information from a relational database as a test-bed application for
its DARPA-sponsored research in
spoken-language understanding. During the same
period, this Air Travel Information Service (ATIS) task was the
subject of annual benchmark evaluations sponsored by DARPA, in which
SRI's systems consistently performed well. In addition to evaluating
the component technology in these benchmarks, we have built two
prototype interactive ATIS systems; a workstation-based system that
visually displays answers in tabular format, and a telephone-based
system that synthesizes spoken responses. Our most recent work on
