Air Travel Information Service (ATIS)

From 1990 to 1994, SRI International used the task of retrieving airline schedules, fares, and related information from a relational database as a test-bed application for its DARPA-sponsored research in spoken-language understanding. During the same period, this Air Travel Information Service (ATIS) task was the subject of annual benchmark evaluations sponsored by DARPA, in which SRI's systems consistently performed well. In addition to evaluating the component technology in these benchmarks, we have built two prototype interactive ATIS systems; a workstation-based system that visually displays answers in tabular format, and a telephone-based system that synthesizes spoken responses. Our most recent work on ATIS is reported in the following papers: To try out our ATIS system, visit our Java ATIS demonstration.
