Related Work
This page contains links to a number of organizations and groups that
are interested in standardizing or supporting 3D geographic visualization.
Many of these are complimentary to the work being performed in
the GeoVRML working group.
Please e-mail the maintainers (below) if you know of a group

The
Equip@ge 3D Information Systems

The GeoVRML.com web site is run by Eric Maranne and contains some wonderful
terrain and urban simulations done using VRML and GeoVRML, among other
technologies. Eric has performed a number of military and commercial
contracts involving terrain visualization and his site includes software
downloads, a gallery of previous work, and a description of services.
Although bearing a similar name, Eric's site is not directly related to the
Web3D GeoVRML working group and is not a commercial effort based solely upon
Web3D GeoVRML technologies. It does have some great content however.

The
Virtual Terrain Project
- The goal of VTP is to foster the creation of tools for easily
constructing any part of the real world in interactive, 3D digital
form. This web site has a host of useful resources relating to
the 3D visualization of terrain.

Geography Network
- The Geography Network is a global community of data providers who
are committed to making geographic content available. This content is
published from many sites around the world, providing you immediate
access to the latest maps, data, and related services. This portal to
the Geography Network enables you to discover this content and share
your own.

The OpenGIS Consortium
- The OGC is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in
1994 to address the lack of interoperability among systems that
process georeferenced data. Of particular interest to GeoVRML
members is the OGC's Web Mapping Technology Testbed.

The Digital Earth Initiative
- Digital Earth will be a virtual representation of our planet that
enables a person to explore and interact with the vast amounts of
natural and cultural information gathered about the Earth. A number
of government, industry, and academic groups are collaborating on
the development of Digital Earth.

SEDRIS:
- The Synthetic Environment Data Representation & Interchange Specification is a project of the US Defense Modeling and Simulation
Office (DMSO) to standardize the data format and some of the tools used for managing
simulation data. When the military says simulation, they generally mean
training and rehearsal for real-world missions using real-world data. Thus
georeferencing of remote sensing data and of other intelligence data is
critical for maintaining versimilitude. Moreover, unlike many other projects
of this kind they are interested in speed, and are making their code publicly
available.

The SIGGRAPH Carto Project:
- The Carto Project is an ongoing outreach initiative
of ACM SIGGRAPH to explore how viewpoints and techniques
from the computer graphics community can be effectively
applied to cartographic and spatial data sets.

GeoTIFF:
- The GeoTIFF project is an effort by a large number (~160) of GIS companies
to standardize a means of georeferencing and managing geocoded (what does
that mean?) raster imagery using the TIFF image file format.

DIS-Java-VRML WG:
- The Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) Protocol is used to
communicate state information (such as position, orientation,
velocities and accelerations) among multiple entities participating in
a shared network environment. Of course in real simulation
environments this information must often be georeferenced. The
DIS-Java-VRML Working Group is another working group of the VRML
Consortium which is writing software and standardizing an API for
integrating DIS data into VRML worlds using Java.
