GeoVRML is an effort to provide support for representing and visualizing
geographic data using standard VRML97 (Virtual Reality Modeling
Language). GeoVRML 1.0 includes a Recommended Practice document that
makes recommendations on how to extend VRML to support geographic
applications. It also includes an open source sample implementation
of the new nodes that are described in this document. This work is
a product of the GeoVRML
Working Group, an official working group of the
Web3D Consortium.
Recommended Practice Document
The GeoVRML 1.0 Recommended Practice document details a number of
goals for representing geographic data using VRML, describes the
various issues associated with these goals, and introduces a number
of new nodes that achieve the goals.
The GeoVRML Run-Time
The GeoVRML 1.0 package includes an open source sample implementation
of the new nodes that are described in the above document. In order
to use these nodes, users must install the GeoVRML 1.0 run-time
on their system.

Example Content
This link provides a number of examples of GeoVRML content as
a showcase for its capabilities. Note, in order to view any GeoVRML
content, you must first download and install the GeoVRML Run-Time
(see above).
Open Source Sample Implementation
Developers can obtain the full source code for the GeoVRML 1.0 nodes
and associated run-time. These are supplied in the spirit of open
source to foster exchange of knowledge and enable the community to
further develop these capabilities. You do not need to download this
material in order to browse GeoVRML scenes.
Tools
This page contains a collection of links to
various tools and utilities that support GeoVRML. This includes
tools that generate GeoVRML data from other sources as well as
tools that perform operations on GeoVRML models themselves.
